I do enjoy listening to the such of Andy McKee but they just don't do it for me; Their music just doesn't seem to have enough character, it all seems so perfect.
In GIHM's case - The guy has skill! Yeah sure mabye its not WOAZERS OMG L33T skill, but he has the skill to capture (great) songs, transform them into his own 'genre' and give them enough atmosphere to give you the pleasure of hearing his interpretation while the original song still shines through at its best.
I've seen so many different covers of so many songs on youtube - but rarely of such orchestral and instrumental artists such as GSYBE. GIHM always seems to be the one to pull his finger out and create such amazing atmospheric covers. I have discovered many new artists which i have found through this guy and enjoy both versions of the song.
But there can be no 'better' version as they both have completely different feels to them. This is what i like about this guy - how he can change a song completely, but keep it the same at heart, so when you listen to the original again.. You can still enjoy it.
It's not the skills which you have that matter, but it's how you use them.
I just feel i had to say this.. And i am gonna go to bed.

(the above video dont work :( so if you want it just download it off there)
actually andy mckee and friends are just showier. they aren't ACTUALLY more technically proficient as I have tried learning both gihm's covers and antoine dufour songs.
ReplyDeleteSo Gihm's skill is WOAZERS OMG L33T, it's just not as showy but equally as difficult. Just watch the takagi masakatsu cover. and realize that he also has transposition talent: turning several melodies into his own singular piece.
